"Memento, homo, quia pelvis es, et in pulverem reverteris."
"Remember, O man, that dust thou art, and to dust thou shalt return."
Those powerful words, spoken on Ash Wednesday during the distribution of ashes, are from the book of Genesis, spoken by God to Adam after his fall. We begin Lent with Adam, and we end Lent with Christ- but the idea of "Memento Mori" or "Remember your death" has been practiced by Saints for centuries. They believed that being reminded of your mortality was a good thing- so that you could try to live each and every day with grace and a readiness to face God. Never put off for tomorrow the good works that you can do today, and never forget that heaven is the ultimate goal.
