Our Lady Undoer of Knots Charm
Pope Francis, who saw this depiction of Our Lady when he was studying in Germany, has popularized this devotion to Our Lady. The painting was commissioned in 1700 by the grandson of a couple whose marriage had been saved by Our Lady.
In the early 1600’s Bavarian wedding custom included binding the arms of the bride and groom together to symbolize their new union. The husband whose marriage was failing brought this wedding ribbon to church, where as he prayed to Our Lady, he untied the knots. When he was finished, the ribbon was dazzling white and looked new, and he knew his marriage was saved (which it was!)
Since then, the image has been used to explain how Mary helps to undo the effects of sin on our lives.
